Designing the Future of Care

health design

The Heat and Medications page provides more information on medications and heat and can guide your review of medications with your patients. Founded by Ahmed Marmoush and Ria Shah, Handl Health provides an AI platform that aggregates and analyzes publicly available healthcare pricing data to help benefits consultants convert new business, retain clients and execute on savings opportunities. Given the ongoing nature and complexity of the data review, it is likely to take several months of continued analysis before enough information will be available to identify and notify impacted customers and individuals. As the company continues to work with leading industry experts to analyze data involved in this cyberattack, it is immediately providing support and robust protections rather than waiting until the conclusion of the data review. Our healthcare team is looking for project managers with large project experience.

In this study, users (ICU nurses) were more efficient and effective, and reported higher satisfaction with the Design Thinking interface. Another study using a quasi-experimental crossover design used Design Thinking to develop an application to guide clinicians in detecting and scoring the severity of graft versus host disease (GvHD) (24). When compared with paper-based NIH guidelines, users of the application (app) signficantly improved diagnostic and scoring accuracy. A final study compared a Design Thinking–based app that provided nurses with information about antibiotic use with regular information sources (which were not described) (35). In the randomized portion of this study, nurses using the app found information on antibiotic use more quickly; however, the app did not enhance their ability to improve antibiotic-related behaviors.

Health insurance giant Kaiser will notify millions of a data breach after sharing patients’ data with advertisers

Department of Health and Human Services of data breaches involving protected health information, such as medical data and patient records. Kaiser also notified California’s attorney general of the data breach, but did not provide any further details. U.S. health conglomerate Kaiser is notifying millions of current and former members of a data breach after confirming it shared patients’ information with third-party advertisers, including Google, Microsoft and X (formerly Twitter). This press release contains “forward-looking statements” which are intended to take advantage of the “safe harbor” provisions of the federal securities law. The words “believe,” “expect,” “intend,” “estimate,” “anticipate,” “forecast,” “outlook,” “plan,” “project,” “should” and similar expressions identify forward-looking statements. These forward-looking statements are based on management’s current expectations and assumptions; however, by their nature, forward-looking statements are subject to risks, uncertainties and assumptions that are difficult to predict or quantify.

Medications, including certain antibiotics, can increase sensitivity of the skin to the sun, and direct heat can degrade or damage certain medications, such as insulin or inhalers. Handl Health, a Los Angeles, CA-based provider of an AI platform built to help benefits consultants design and deliver health benefits, raised $2.5M in Seed funding. The Kaiser Foundation Health Plan is the parent organization of several entities that make up Kaiser Permanente, one of the largest healthcare organizations in the United States. The Kaiser Foundation Health Plan provides health insurance plans to employers and reported 12.5 million members as of the end of 2023. U.S. organizations covered under the health privacy law known as HIPAA are required to notify the U.S.

Bruns proposes that the design co-creation approach, focused on the untested and untreated “last mile men” with respect to the project's problem solving, enabled an empathy for at-risk men and their caregivers across the advisory group. This empathy allowed prototypes to be rapidly evaluated because the feasibility, viability, and desirability of all parties had been considered from the beginning. This case study exemplifies “design as ingredient” as the program used parts of the design process in conjunction with other approaches from the social and behavioral sciences such as quantitative and qualitative formative research, segmentation, and ethnography.

As the number of aging workers increases, employment policies and organizational practices are shifting to support more age-friendly work environments. Many of these age-friendly policies attempt to address ageist, abusive, hostile treatment that older workers and persons with disabilities often face due to pervasive stereotypes (Brownell & Kelly, 2013). However, many employers are also making proactive attempts at recognizing that when the culture and environment are positive and supportive of everyone, productivity and quality of work are higher (Brownell & Kelly, 2013). Strategies that aim to support age-friendly work environments are clearly beneficial to workers of all ages.

When designing for aging, there are great opportunities at hand to design for ourselves—for every age—for all. Public policies and design strategies tend to focus on meeting the basic safety and physiological needs of older members of society, but there are missed opportunities to support the higher-level needs of all humans. Referencing Maslow’s hierarchy of needs as well as foundational principles of sustainable design, this brief presents a shifting paradigm in the design of environments for aging toward more universal solutions.

From oversamples to targeting through predictive modeling to data collection methodology innovations, learn how CHIS is continuing to evolve its methodology to remain relevant. The UCLA Center for Health Policy Research (CHPR) is one of the nation's leading health policy research centers and the premier source of health policy information for California. Come down to the Health Design Lab for our Open Sessions and “jam” with faculty, staff, students, and other design community members about ideas for making the world a better place.

We understand what is important to your organization and utilize reporting to track engagement, progress, and outcomes. Starting in 2019, CHIS transformed from a dual-frame landline/cell phone random-digit dial methodology to a mixed-mode (web and telephone) survey that uses an address-based sampling methodology. Between now and 2050, the world’s oldest group (aged 80 and over) is projected to more than triple, from 126.5 million to 446.6 million (He et al., 2016). Urgent attention is being paid to this “Silver Tsunami,” making subsequent population waves easy to discount—but a lack of foresight could set us up to be blindsided in a few short years.

Conclusions drawn from small user samples should be tested in broader populations to ensure their applicability. For example, a research team that uses a qualitative Design Thinking approach early in the research process (eg, user observations, focus groups, and usability tests with small groups of target users) may be able to generate insights into the key needs of the target population. This approach may also find ways to address these needs, and subsequent quantitative testing of the developed interventions in broader samples will allow the group to evaluate whether their assumptions generalize to the broader population, and the intervention will be more effective as a result. The 24 interventions summarized in this review provide an overview of the breadth of Design Thinking’s applicability in health care and demonstrate that it is feasible and applicable to multiple health care domains. It has been applied across a range of diverse patient populations and conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (28,34), diabetes (34,47), caregiver stress (27), and posttraumatic stress disorder (22).

These changes outline a variety of basic human rights, such as requiring that facilities investigate and report all allegations of abusive conduct (CMS, 2015). Given that the new rules—which should have been implicit decades ago—are being touted as a “major step forward” (Hersher, 2016), there is clearly a long road ahead. Design strategies include environments that support aging in place, social networks, active living, age-friendly workplaces, and person-centered healthcare.

As a facilities director it is a relief to be able to put trust in GDG and know that they have the hospital’s best interest in mind when pursuing our projects. Initial results of the interventions included in this review are promising; all but one demonstrated positive effects on at least one identified outcome, and half showed positive effects on all measured outcomes. In addition, in the studies that directly compared the Design Thinking intervention with a traditional intervention, the Design Thinking intervention generally demonstrated improved outcomes and higher usability and satisfaction. Applying Design Thinking to health care could enhance innovation, efficiency, and effectiveness by increasing focus on patient and provider needs.
